Default Trees suitable for boundaries in Brisbane

I have a low picket fence on one boundary with our neighbour.
We are happy for the picket fence to stay, but want to create a little bit of privacy in front of our kitchen window.

We we like something that be kept at 1.8 to 2.4m tall but very skinny (like 500mm)

Something like a pencil pine (but I hear they don't do well in Brisbane)
Probabbly not a hedge.
Clumping Bamboo is OK, but I think it would be hard to restrain (what if bamboo was in pots to restrict root system?)

Any ideas?

Thanks.

A hedge from shrubs would be easiest to keep at the height you want, because most shrubs don't grow tall. In fact the definition of a tree is a woody plant that grows more than 30 ft (10 m) tall.

I know privet is considered a weed there, but it would do what you want quite well, can be endlessly trimmed and shaped and normally takes a long time for the trunks to get large. I sure the Aussies can suggest more suitable species,
