Hi Arborists, I am attempting to find out the weight of a mature tree (e.g. 300DBH and 15m high). I am attempting to work out slab thickness requirements on a roof top garden and require either a reliable formula or calculator. Tree species may be Waterhousia floribunda or similar I have discovered this calculator. MODULE NAME GOES HERE: Basic Science Is this calculator reliable?? it is telling me that if I had a 300DBH tree at 15m high the weight would be 591 Kilograms?? Regards |

On a sailing ship do they engineer the hull to take the weight of the mast or the full open sail force for a given wind speed? I think a 300mm DBH Waterhousia floribunda wouldn't be 15m high but I'd guess it's weight between 300kg and 600kg depending on branching structure etc not counting the roots. Also consider soil weight and volume for the tree to survive. How deep will the soil profile be and what sort of anchorage will roots have beside the soil which could separate at the horizon of soil/concrete? Interesting project you have there. At the Mattheck seminar @ 2005 Brisbane he did some research on anchors for trees and discovered that 50mm to 75mm dia rock or bollards were best. They were looking at a project of putting a London Plane on-top of a high-rise rooftop garden etc. The bollards would be bolted down onto the roof, imagine one of those things ships tie up to in miniature. Roots would grow around them etc providing anchorage to the rooftop.
