Hi all! Just wondering if anyone can advise regarding browning of evergreen- think it's a cedar of some sort, not sure? Moved into house couple of months ago, during this time leaves slowly turning yellow then bronze/brown. Have not used chemcials in the garden. Not sure if natural shed or something that I should be concerned about? Please see pics. Thanks Aly |

Looks more like a Juniper, maybe Eastern Red Cedar (which is actually a Juniper - common names can be confusing) Juniperus virginiana - in the US grows in zones 2-9, tends to have a pyramidal structure. Being a juniper, is subject to juniper-hawthorn rust. The rust has a worse effect on hawthorn, but the juniper is also affected. In the spring the rust usually has an orangey-brown gelatinous form, later and earlier looks like a brown ball on the branch. Removing the ball, or the twig can help the juniper; removing the juniper in time can save the hawthorn. Not too many neighbours want to remove the juniper to help the neighbour's hawthorns. ![]() Occasional brown branches might also be broken branches from an animal climbing on them. |

These conifer cedar things seem to get this browing issue world wide. Is that the sunniest side? We get patches like that on our conifers here when it's too dry or too hot, and unlike other trees where they're brown they're dead and will always be a dead empty patch when cut out. Other trees grow new leaves and fill out more but those trees ..... hmmm, cut only what you really have too. Check for little mites, little drops of resin (sap) coming out of twigs, sometimes they get tiny borers, mites, fungal infections etc ... PITA trees!

Aw, c'mon Ekka, they help keep everybody in business. And Junipers like dry sites. Just a PITA to get the needles down your shirt. Spider mites could be a problem tho. |

We're sub tropical here and many of these types of trees are not suited to hot wet summers and drier winters, sort of reverse of what they should be living in.
