Default Tree split down middle

I have two the same trees and one has split right down the middle, the other one is starting to do the same thing. There didn't appear to be anything that caused this to split (fungus, bugs, etc.). What can I do to save this tree and to keep the other one from doing the same thing. My husband put a come a long on the first tree to keep it together.Should we bolt this tree together? What about the other one? Also, does anyone know what the name of this tree is?

Not easy to see what is going on however what caused it to split is likely wind.

When a lot of branches grow from the same point of a tree it can become a weak point as many forces are acting in the same place. It does appear to have split at the BBR.

I think a combination of pruning, through bolting or cabling is the go here. I'd suggest you have some-one come out and do it because the tree is juvenile and doing it right matters as now is the age you formative prune the tree.

The arborist can also inspect and advise on other trees, give you the knowledge as to what to look for and how to do it.

Other than that use the search button here, check out this forum area as it has lots of documents etc.

That's a honey locust, genus gleditsia. Hard to see the split, see loose bark, though.

Ekka gave you good advice.
