Hello Everyone, I bought a Fraxinus Americana Autumn Purple tree from The Hilltop March 18th, 2008. When the tree was first planted, it leafed out real good and looked great. But now the tree doesn't look right as you can see in the pictures. It just didn't leaf out as good. Also it took till the second week of June 2010 before the buds on the tree bloomed. And with that being said not all buds have bloom to this day. The tree is green and growing but just does not look right. I live in Rio Rancho, NM. Its a dry heat climate out here and the tree is still young. Can anyone assist me or give me some sort of direction to take with this or is this normal? Please let me know if you need any additional information. Thanks in advance. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It's hard to believe it is the same tree. Looks a lot like winter damage, like it warmed up in the spring, some buds started to flush, and got killed by a frost. Trees do vary when bud flush is, depending on temperature. THe first picture you showed was last year, and the 2nd this year? Was it ball and burlap, bareroot? fertilized last year or not? pesticides on lawn for weeds? NEed more info.

I saw the same symptoms several times this year due to frost. Ashes were some of the worst, I account it to leaf break timing. As treeshaveneeds said we need more info before proper diagnosis Quote:

Thank you guys for your replies. The first picture I posted was the day after the tree was planted in 2008. 2009 the tree was fine but the leaves fell off the tree all at once during the fall. The other pictures were taken from 2010. I did not fertilize the tree other than watering the tree here and there making sure not to over water. I sprayed some weed b gone to get rid of some weeds around the front lawn but not on the tree directly. The tree was planted bare root. Also before the tree was planted. Two willow trees had to be poisoned and removed due to the tree veins rising above ground and breaking up the walkway. Sorry can't think on anything else to provide. One again thanks for taking the time to read/reply to my post. |

My apologies. I didn't see an edit button. The tree was ball and burlap, not bareroot.

Hi Alacour ![]() I would suggest removing that lawn from around the base of the trunk to the drip line of the tree, whilst it looks a nice lawn, it is robbing the tree of nutrients. Mulch, not lawn. regards Julie. |
