I have a client with 2 gum tree's next to each other approx 4m apart, one has borer holes 3/4 of the way up the tree and starting to die that I will be removing, the other has no signs of being attacked yet. Is there something that I can apply to the healthy tree to stop it getting attacked by the borers ? or to the almost dead tree to kill off any remaining borers ? Situated in country Victoria/Australia. Thanks, Gids |

Any idea what sort of borers? Also, are you sure borers killed the tree and that they're not secondary pathogens finishing off something already started? Pictures would be good too.

For starters, improve the health of the tree through cultural practices as borers most often attack weak trees. |

Mate, the tree looks buried to me. I think the borers are secondary pathogens and the tree's cactus mate. Has the area been filled? Are these epicormics growing out of the trunk?

Do the H/O and yourself a kindness and get the thing chipperized now before its definetly a tower job.

I agree w Ekka--bugs are not the issue, burying is. Find the flare and assess the roots before worrying about anything else.

Could be a your specialty, Guy, a girdler rather than backfill causing the lack of flare.

Probly could have been back filled up to the trunk. The tree looks older than the house. I will see the owners. It looks like a branch/limb has broken of to the upper left off this pic. If you look at the pic of the whole tree you can just see it about 3m up on the RHS towards the fence. The alive tree in the back ground has a limb missing in roughly the same spot with epicomics growing out of the wound. Looks like storm damage as its torn the bark downwards and the been cut. This tree's going to come out, no need for a tower its not very big and plenty of room to drop it into. I'm more worried about the alive one as its a lot bigger and a good asset to the yard. Thanks, Andrew |
