Default Termites?

I have a river birch in my yard. One day while working in the yard, I noticed when I put my hand at the base of the tree , a large chunk of bark crumbled off the trunk. There were several insects, either ants or termites. Is it possible that any type of termite would go after a living tree? I live in Southern Ohio.
