Default Take it down for safety, or give it a chance?

Storm came through and ripped off a main branch on our 10 year old maple tree. When the branch came off, it took about 50% of the main trunk with it, about 1/3 of the way up... which means the top 2/3rds is being supported by only 50% of what used to be there. The question is: should I let the tree continue growing and just see what happens? Or is it inevitable that the tree will not hold the weight, and maybe I should take it down? Thoughts?

Need some pics to give advice, straight on or at 30 degrees from perpendicular to show contrast and depth, and from both sides - of the wound area, and the tree as a whole, and also of the leaves. SOme maples are much more able to contend with major injury than others, in part depending on how fast they grow,
What is the diameter of the lost limb, and the diameter of the wounded top?
