Default Sugar Maple with trunk condition

I have a Sugar Maple tree with an irregularity at the base of the trunk. The tree is 3 or 4 years old, 300 mm (12 inches) in diameter, and 5 m (17 feet) tall. The tree is in the Detroit, Michigan, USA area. I would like to know if this condition will prevent the tree from growing correctly in the future. Thank you for your help.

The irregularity you have shown will not stop the tree from growing. Indeed the callus tissue is growing over the old injury, and will in time surround and envelop the old wound -- which will always be there, and the tree will always have rot at the centre. The larger the tree grows, the more insignificant this wound becomes.

However, the trunk seems to narrow in at the ground level instead of being the same diameter, or flaring outwards slightly. THis may indicate root strangulation. THe condition is correctable, just a lot of work.

Thank you very much for the information. I will hire an arborist to work on root strangulation.

Looks buried too, have some-one excavate (by hand carefully) to find trunk flare .... using a garden hose is an easy way to go.

Pictures of what you find would be nice for us to see.

Tree seems to be beefing on the wood which is good news.
