I purchased a Fringe tree from a catalog company approximately 4 years ago. When I received it it was a stick - approximately 3' tall. Today it is approximately 6' tall and this is the first year that some "fringe" has appeared. I'm pretty sure we probably planted it incorrectly (too deep). The problem I'm having is the sucker growth, coming from the trunk, below ground level. We just keep cutting the suckers (there are 4 - all coming from the same area) down to the ground. Is there any way to remove this growth without harming the tree.....for example - could I just dig down a little and cut the suckers off the trunk? If so, do I then apply some type of sealant on the trunk? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. It's a pretty tree!
