Default Stumped

Hi, I live in Toronto, Canada and have recently been told by the City that the tree in front of our house, which is on City property, is dying and must be removed. This will be quite a shock to us and our neighborhood because it is a large Norway Maple. Not knowing much about the differant speicies of trees I'm hoping someone on this Forum can help. The city has given us a list of trees we can choose from for replanting, but it is very difficult. The list includes
Maple- Sugar,Black,Silver,Red
Oak - Red,Bur,White, Swamp, Chinquapin
Basswood
Black Cherry
Hackberry
Northern Catalpa
Sassafras
Cucumbertree
ironwood
Black-locust
Tuliptree
Yelow-wood
Honey-locust
There are a few more, I need some advice on which tree to choose. I would like a tree that is not as messy as the Norway maple and one that will grow in fairly quickly. There are no restrictions as to size or area. It is in full sunlight and the ground is fairly dry.

Perhaps if unsure ask your City arborist to help narrow the field and advise you what will prosper in your location. He/she probably best equipped to assist you. A real nice city Toronto I spent a month there back in 80ies.

Tuliptrees one of my favorites on your list.

Tulip- tree, yellow-wood and hackberry are all good trees, and not too many around, so fewer pest problems. Kentucky Coffee-tree and Honey Locust are also good choices.

Depending where you are in Toronto, I would be happy to come by and give advice based on location and your desires.

Thanks for the prompt responses.
The city forestry people just stuck a list of possible trees in my mail-box and I'm trying to make an educated choice. We are located in Etobicoke around Eglington and Kipling. I got the impression the city controlls where the tree is located. I'm looking for a tree that is not as messy as a Norway Maple and would grow relatively quick. The city will plant a larger tree if we are willing to pay 600 dollars. I would like to explore having a fully grown tree brought in with a Spadetruck depending in the cost.
