You can refer to my other post about tree damage I suffered recently. The tree is now complete down, and removed. Stump is cut as close as I could get it to the ground. I plan to grind the stump out, and I understand that it's best to grind it about 12 inches deep. So my question is this- will I be able to plant a new tree or shrub at this same spot after the stump is ground out? |

Sure, you can grind to just about any depth. Just remove the grindings from the hole and fill with soil .... grindings have a lot of wood chip content.

If you could wait awhile, you can leave the chips in the hole. I have had good luck grinding a stump in the spring, stirring in a generous amount of fertilizer into the chips and soil and leaving it to compost through the summer. Then plant your new tree in the fall in the same place. |

I have generally found you need extra nitrogen to break down the chips in a reasonable time frame, or decomposition takes extra nitrogen from the soil and starves the new plant. I generally recommend planting another tree/shrub offset from the original stump. Works better for the new planting.

it may not be best to plant the same species tree in the same place because whatever killed the 1st tree will enjoy killing the replacement |
