Found this tree with really strange dimples or holes. There are several trees within 30 feet of this one that don't have these holes. Im guessing its some kind of reaction to a fungal disease. Location: Northern Willamette valley Oregon USA Please help me figure this out!! Thanks Nickernator ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Eric Frei; 25th September 2011 at 04:21 PM. It looks to me like other branches were interfering there. Of course now those branches are gone and the affected area has decayed. This picture was taken in the car park of Ellenborough Falls NSW ... perhaps the lady in pink (bottom left) looked up! ![]() ![]()

Here's another picture of when branches rub, it's a very common thing to see I have noticed as I get around doing my job. Eric's photo is taken out in the bush, mine is taken in suburbia.

The dimples you show Nickernator remind me of branches that have been torn out of the tree eg ice storm and/or heavy winds - the multiple ridges are the annual rings. Eventually the tree will grow around the hole -- if the tree lives long enough. Were you able to identify which species seemed most prone?
