Default Strange Insects on Our Maple

I live in Northeastern Ohio and we found 20+ colonies of these insects on our maple tree. We think it is a sugar maple but we are not 100% sure, so a picture of the leaves is included.

The colonies range from around a hundred insects to around a thousand. Those are rough estimates, of course. Anyway, we don't know what they are or where they came from but they're probably not good. Thanks in advance for anything you can tell us.

They appear very cicada like to me, can find no exact match but would suspect that they are cicadas or a very close relative.

Question Re: Strange Insects on Our Maple

Thanks for replying.

I thought that too when I saw them. But, I've never seen a cicada that was so small. The larger, winged ones seem to be a little less than a centimeter in length. The small greenish ones seem to be 3-ish mm long.

We're worried they'll destroy the tree, and we love that tree =(
