I'd have to guess that a large majority of the other 21 folks who voted "burl" probably did as I did, and read through the post first trying to decide what the general consensus was.

Based on my "research", I've decided that what we have there, folks, is a Burl.

I agree with the burl diagnosis. I save them for a friend that machines them into bowls. Yes, I log the mature growth tree first!

Lots of logging still going on, lots of it legal too.

This whole climate change thing is being used as big stick by many.... incorrectly, it's a lot of BS in many places.

Be interesting to have xray vision and watch how all the curling aspects of their transport system move water, nutrients and photosynthate and compartmentalize.

i know,i was screwing with him, around here lots of people clear off thier land and plant slash pine[Pinus elliottii]on thier land, let them grow for about 25 years then have a timber company log them off, then replant.Just like a farmer plants crops and harvests them.

Hi Folks,
I was on a tour of the Royal Botanical Gardens this morning past and while sitting in the cafe having a break I spotted this growth on this Syzygium francisii Giant Water Gum of the MYRTACEAE family and thought it would fit just nice to this thread, what type of growth is this????

Sorry about the quality of the photos, it was the best angle I could get with the sun bearing down.

This one claims to be the worlds biggest burl. From Port Mcneill, Vancover Island, BC Canada. Blew me away when I saw it.

I saw the burl on a road trip, before it had a roof over it, I didn't stop, because it was big enough at speed to appreciate. The photo was pulled off Port Mcneill's tourism website. So I was going to reply it was either a Western Red Cedar or a Douglas Fir, but I thought I better check my facts. It turns out it is a Sitka Spruce picea sitchensis. This is one of those species which has been logged into oblivion. It was a great wood prefered for ship's masts and oars, now if you want some you have to scavenge an old log boom or recycle. Nice eh. And they are called burls on the island. I think burl is a woodworker's term and gall a biologist's term. Like the diference between a tree and a board.

How about explaining the cause? The most reasonable explanation I've heard is that an insect begins feeding on the sap, and the tree responds by sending more sap to the area. Then after the insect leaves the tree keeps on sending extra hormones and nutrients to the area.

There are different causes of burls some are caused by a bacterial infection the tree recognises a threat/weakness in the area and keeps putting cambium over the area and so it grows, others are caused by insects again its cambium build up not so much sap.

Seems that a gall is responsive to insect or fungal stimulus and is limited in size although it may be encapsulated over time.

A burl on the other hand is perennial and gets larger over time.
