Pretty hard to say without being on site, but if it happens at night I would lean towards a raccoon or possibly a possum-- maybe fighting, maybe gathering food -- at a different time of year, perhaps for a nest.

I used to live in a forestry barracks on a remote tableland, the other guy started getting freaked out by the noises from the walls in his room. I thought he was a nutter until one long weekend while he was on leave he convinced me to camp on the floor in my swag and see for myself. I still rekon he is a nutter, but he was certainly hearing scratching and timber tearing noises coming from his walls. The termites had eaten all the pine trim in his room, leaving only the shell of the timber under the paint. You couldn't see it until you poked your finger thru the paint. Funnily enough that was the only thing the termites had eaten = the rest of the building was found to be perfectly fine. It is amazing how loud termite feeding can appear to be when heard in the darkness. Probably got nothing to do with the noises you heard. |
