If you had your climbing line in the other tree, Quercus, you'd have to pass within a foot of primary power lines, phone and tv lines, etc etc. The wires are VERY close to the other leader, which is why I didn't use it for my TIP. I actually had a reason for not doing it.

That, and if I were tied into that leader, but out on the other one, and lost footing or some such, I'd swing back across right into those lines. Probably it'd ruin my day. If you actually look at the pictures, you should be able to see the lines I'm talking about. It didn't seem like a wise choice. Plus, if I was really worried about that limb failing, I'd still have been connected to it. That doesn't really seem to smart. <shrugs> As to how I climbed it, I already posted that. (threw a line over, used a running bowline, and ascended straight up using a Petzl minitraxion and tibloc) I ratchet strapped it both for security and fall protection.

Racks though, ohhhhh yeah. I'm glad you understand how awesome they are I love that thing, ever since I got it it's just been sooooo usefull. I like that you can use more or less bars depending on the weight of your rigged piece, which affords you control dialed in just how you want it.

The line running just behind the leader on the left is a primary service line, runs from pole to pole along the road there. Big THICK cable bundle, black and whites. It runs right up next to that leader. I didn't want to have anything to do with roping up in that leader and having to be near those lines. That's why I strapped the leaders together and ascended into the damaged one.

I've gotta go back probably early next week and prune that damaged leader, since when I was there all I did was damage removal. I'll probably strap them in two spots, then if my 12ga launcher is operational by then, use it to lob a line up and over the injured leader, further up.

I forgot to mention, TreeDimensional mentioned sounding the trunk using a mallet. It sounds pretty solid, I sounded it circumferentially up and down both leaders and they sounded okay.

I'm sorry Therrin, but in the pictures of your first post those cables seem to be in front of the damaged section. I could be wrong though... And when it's a bundle, they are probably isolated with rubber coating. We touch cables like that out here all the time when pruning. No problem... But that's here, I've never seen the cables you guys have hanging around.

I mainly work around service that I don't really worry about because around here it rarley exceeds 400volts and the insulation stays on them pretty well.Howvever the primarys often have cracks in thier insulation.I don't fool with primarys but service drops or secondarys I won't hesitate. The only time I turned down a power related job was a friend of mine called when he got home from work after a wind storm and had a pecan branch streching the wires tight and he still had power in his house he called me and I told him call the power co and have them send a guy with a bucket.i don't usually care what happens to me but that would be stupid to attempt as a climber.

There are two sets of cables Quercus, the first set are the primaries running alongside the left-side leader, the other set are secondaries running just underneath the damaged leader.

I believe the utility pruners did that before Therrin got there, looks like a large proportion of the crown is in the top 1/3 of the stem. Remember, right tree, right location.

have you ever heard of the term "tracking". check it out. only 400volts. would youstick your hand onto the bus bar in your panel at home? newguy you sound so nonchelant about them. have you ever been nailed? hopefully when ya do it not lethal or at least someone is there to put you out when you catch fire. the entrance holes are usually minute but the exits are nasty.
just a tip: wear gloves, no hooks, and dont rest on the tree when cutting limbs near them as whatever is touching the tree will be your path to ground.

The primarys appear to be up and behind the other part of that tree, the secondarys are were the ones that looked like 3 wires twisted that passed near the break, and the rest are phone, cable, etc...

That's right Danny.

Sorry if I hadn't mentioned earlier that there were two sets of wires running around that thing. I KNOW they're still dangerous, but the 220's don't freak me out as much as the primaries.

Thanks for the tips Shea. Since I'm just pruning these ones, I wouldn't be wearing hooks anyway now would I? The h.o. thought it strange that I wasn't gonna be using hooks to prune them since the line clearance guys spike the shyte out of them every time they come through.

Not resting on the tree is good advice, I'd not have thought of that.

Everyone's "hell on saftey" because not doing that kills people...

When I was doing electrical work as a handyman I gained a healthy respect for getting zapped, decided the fewer times the better!!!!

Maybe yer heart trouble is from getting cooked one too many times eh? You're too young to be having that much trouble naturally man.

As far as the safety issues, yeah, it gets old sometimes, but ya gotta remember WHY people push it so hard. Next time ya fall out of a tree, or chainsaw your knuckles open, or get zapped.... ya gotta think "damn, I could've avoided this if I didnt tell all those safety-conscious people to go and off!"

Just think of all the older people nagging you as people who're interested in seeing you grow old Newguy =)

Who knows why my heart acts up.I know that all the years of drinking 3 and 4 pots of coffee and energy drinks didn't help me.I'm sure not eating right contributed to it and its in my family's background[on both sides].i'm not really bragging as it sucks when you gotta slow down or stop because you chest hurts.Today was probabley my first day with only 2 1/2 cups of coffee since I was 9.I do believe I also told once how I feel about getting old no need to repeat it here.
