I have an August Glory Maple. This is the first spring for it after planting. I live in Dallas, State of Texas, USA. After planting last season it got hot here quick, the tree survived after not looking to good. Now I wonder if something is wrong with it. It looks as thought the bark is separating in different areas. If you can tell by the pictures, one area is near the bottom of the tree. The other is near a branch that I Cut off as a result of it being broken by transport to my house. I do not remember seeing any kind of cracks in the bark when they planted this tree. I'm hoping that this is something common for this tree type. Two or three limbs look as though they may be dying. There are small green leaves with other dead leaves on the branch. Oh by the way we did have a cold winter this year with about 4 days of temperature right at or below freezing and 8 to 12 inches of snow. Well let me resize and then try to attach pics. Thanks, I'm perplexed Rich |

Looks buried too deep, mulch up to the trunk .... collar rot, fungal attack and death coming. re-establish original grade, pull mulch away from trunk so basal flare can be seen. Do not fertilize, use organic soil conditioners, try to apply mycorrhizal fungi to soil and spray entire tree with same ..... and pray coz she's near cactus! Oh, and what is all that wire stuff about? Need a distance shot of the whole tree

It should be buried at proper level. The mulch is covering the crown. But at any rate I will take a little off and look at crown condition. Here is a pic of over all tree. Notice two or three dead? limbs near the middle-by the dead limb that was cut off after transport damage. The wires were put in place after the tree was planted and will come off toward the end of this summer. After looking around the yard it seems I do have a fungi problem on Indian hawthorn bushes. Can you recommend a good brand name fungicide in a liquid form to spray whole yard with.

It looks like the V.W. or more then likely its what ekka said burried to deep which causes gurdiling roots. Espcially in that species. Clean the soil away from the trunk and send pix. If its verticillum wilt cut it down and dont plant a maple species in its place

Ok here is the crown pics. I pealed away the dead bark by bottom to expose the trunk to see what it looks like. I also contacted my County Ag extension to see if they can test for wilt and how much it would cost. I'm hoping its just the root ball and maybe something I can remedy in that area. What do you guys think.

It's got some bad girdling roots, I'd carefully cut them off for starters. The wound might seal over in time if the tree vitality increases.
