Below are pictures of a White Brich (I believe that what it is called?), which was struck by a truck that backed up our driveway years ago. Just this year I have noticed the opening that was created by the injury is beginning to look more and more excavated. The area of missing try also seems to be getting bigger. What can I do to stop this damage and also do I need to do anything about these mushroom like growths at the bottom of the tree. This is my first post but am greatly worried about losing this beautiful tree. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks all .

White Birch is a beautiful tree, BUT it is highly sensitive to damage of the trunk or changes in compaction of the soil or other soil changes. Typically it compartmentalizes very poorly, and once damaged rot spreads faster than expected and strength deteriorates at an alarming speed. The fungus on the ground strongly suggests rotting of the root system, and failure is imminent. ![]() Remove the tree at once, while it can still be done safely. If you wish to have birch in the future, protect the area with large boulders to minimize future impacts. Sorry for the bad news. |
