I would like to plant 2 silver birch trees in my garden on Sydney's lower north shore. I have been told the climate is not really suitable and they won't do well. I chose them because I want something small and deciduous. Thoughts please? |

A nice tree, but here in Melbourne at least, the drought has severely stressed and/or contributed to the decline & death of the majority of examples of the species I have come across over the last couple of years. With exception to those in very well nurtured gardens, well mulched root zones & tank irrigation. |

Birch trees generally prefer soils with raised moisture levels they are one of the early pioneer species into wet and boggy areas in Europe, so yes they will be somewhat intolerant of prolonged dry spells. I really don't know how they go in different parts of Sydney, sorry. |
