I have a mature silver birch tree some 60-70 feet high. It is some 35 feet from the house. It is on a down slope from the house, but due to other tall trees close by it has grown leaning towards the house, say 20 degrees off vertical. Last Autumn my treeman discovered rotting in the trunk some 15-20 feet up where a branch had been sawn off probably at least 10 years ago (we bought the house, built 1935, 10 years ago). When the rot was scraped out there was a hole inside the trunk some 15" deep and 6" wide. This was filled with compressed tarmac and sealed with Arbrex. My question is, what is the useful life of the tree? I like it, but am concerned that if it were to fall it is likely to hit the house as all the weight is leaning in that direction. There has been other pruning of lower branches in recent years. Jeff Elder |
