Default Sickly Elm

Hi my father inlaw has what I believe is an elm tree in his back yard that upto about a year ago was going very well, but now is looking very sick it has hardly any full size regrowth and large thick peices of bark are peeling of and alot of branches have died off. Most of the regrowth is tiny and almost moss like because it is so tiny. I will try to attatch a few pics. He lives on the coast in Victoria. He likes this tree so any help that might save it would be appreciated..... I'm on an iPhone ATM and dosn't look like I can attach a pic.

please do post pictures as they will help identify for sure, but it kind of sounds to me like it has dutch elm disease, and is not long for this world, it happened to our neighbors tree, it leafed out small, then the leaves turned yellow fell off, once that happened I pulled the bark off and you could see the trails from the beetle larvae

I agree with Treeluver. If the bark is peeling off, and you can see the galleries on the trunk, it is very likely Dutch Elm disease. There is no cure, save cutting down the trunk, running the stem thru a debarker and burning the bark and outer 1/ 2" of wood, the wood can then be salvaged and made into something that befits the memories you associated with this tree. Sorry for your loss.
