Dear Tree World,
I am no tree expert, but it appears I have a sick Basswood, Linden tree. I live in Wisconsin and bought my house just over a year ago. In June 2008 my neighbors and I experienced some flooding. As you can see, my Basswood sat in standing water for about 4-6 weeks (see 6-18-08A picture). Despite the flooding, the tree blossomed with full foliage and was an amazing shade tree last summer. This past spring and early summer, this tree has not blossomed (see other picture). It has very little foliage and the foliage that is present, seems much smaller. I don’t believe this is an insect problem, but once again I am no tree expert. My neighbors tell me there has been high water in the past, so I don’t think this is the first time this tree has experienced an influx of water. Also, many of my neighbors have similar mature trees in close proximity to the water that experienced the same high water last summer but have blossomed fully this summer. So, I am in need of some assistance. I really do not want to cut this tree down if there is something I can do. It is absolutely beautiful when healthy. Is my tree suffocating from the high water of last summer? Is it something else? Is there anything I can do to bring this beautiful tree back to looking healthy again? I miss the shade it provided! Thanks in advance for any help!!
