| Someone who I do a bit of work for wants to put a nice shade tree or two in their yard in front of their house, but want something that's root system won't tear up his lawn and patio. Considering that the tree was planted a propper distance from such things as that and the house, what are good varieties to choose from? The location is Los Angeles County of Southern California, but if someone can point me in the direction of some good species to check on then that'd be helpfull.

| Recently did a removal of a large Modesto ash in a frontyard, the homeowner wanted to replace it with some thing large enough to shade the house, but didn't want a problematic tree. A local Consulting Arborist recomended the Chinese Flame Tree (Koleueuteria bipinnata) I personally don't know much about this tree, but respect the guy who made the recomendation. |

| Hey, I forgot about this thread. Got sidetracked when I first saw it, by going to the Los Angeles Urban Forestry website to see what they might suggest if anything. That led me to other websites and links, and one had the big Santa Barbara Moreton Bay Fig. Which is the one I photographed on my way back. One website says that 10,000 people could fit under it's canopy. Anyhow, went searching for some tree ideas, and ended up reading about a bunch of other stuff. |

| I actually got sidetracked too but thanks for the suggestions, I'm looking into them. As far as the place it's going... its not a neighborhood, private ranch, tucked back up in a canyon. There's lots of space, and no worries about things like paved roads and sidewalks. I've been doing work for them off and on, just dropped by there today actually. Told them I was workin on it, they said take your time. Nice folks.
