The backside of my house gets direct sunlight on my living room and I'd like to put in a nice shade tree next to the living room to help block some of the sun on that side of the house. Here are the basics on the area I want to put the tree: 1. I live in Yuba City (greater Sacramento area but plant sites say I'm in zone 7b?) 2. The area gets direct light the entire day, is on the SE corner of the house, and this area of the yard has rock installed with no sprinkler systems to worry about uprooting. 3. There is only about 10ft between my patio (cement) and the fence, this could be a problem right? 4. I would really prefer something that is low-mess but can handle a little seasonal cleanup. I don't think I need anything grand or huge, but it can't take over my patio or start lifting the fence on that side. I'm very hopeless with landscaping and plants, so any detailed help is welcome! Thanks! Christina |

Why don't you look at a bush. Many bushes grow 15-20 feet tall, minimal mess, don't need much space to grow, and will provide privacy and shade. Try a local nursery to see what plants are available, and you like the look of, and can advise you then. Note the common and latin names.
