Default redbud tree with little leaves, scraggly in appearance

My redbud tree was beautiful with its pink blossoms this spring but now that the leaves are starting to come out it is scraggly and has very little leaves present. What could be the cause of this?

It is five years old and has not had any problems in the past. It is not infested with insects nor does it have the ridge fungus that I read about. I fertilized it last year but so far have done nothing to it this year.

Can you help?
