I live in the Chicago suburbs. I have red maple with about a 3" trunk that the leaves have become varigated.. deep green center, light green outer. Is this normal? 3 years ago a buck scraped a strip about 3" wide by 18" long off of the trunk. Due to an excess of rain, the area where it's planted has been very moist ever since the thaw... actually swampy in spots a few feet away from the trunk. Other than this, the tree seems healthy. Is this normal?

My guess would be that you are seeing a symptom of manganese chlorosis. It's very common in trees around here.

Chlorotic leaves can be a symptom of a variety of nutrient deficiencies. Iron and manganese are the two most common. A soil test is in order. Also, it could be caused by overly wet soils as well. |
