Default Raywood Ash

We are replacing some 150 ft of side walk. There are many roots from raywood ash trees. We want to prune some large roots on one side of the tree about 6 feet along the side of tree ( 2 or 3 of the roots. These roots are just under the concrete side walk we removed. 6" in Diameter. The truck dia. is about 18". The trees are very mature and are between a curb and gutter and these sidewalks.
Help !!

I Meant the trunk diameter. Will this tree fail if we cut 2 or 3 of the 6 " diameter roots? Does a Raywood Ash Tree have many deep roots? These are surface roots we are only cutting on one side about 5 - 6 ' in Lenght.

Can you realigned or use alternative construction to avoid or minimise, Raywood may have many root layers often some are deeper but much depends upon the soil profile. Find a good arborist to assist in your works or if can post some pictures here be helpfull for us.

I agree with derwoodii, raising the sidewalk(or realigning it) to clear the roots would be preferable to cutting the roots. If you are on clay, most of the roots will be surface roots, and cutting off roots destabilizes the tree, and greatly reduces the ability of the tree to take up water and nutrients. In fact, the major roots of the trees may be headed for the gutter to take up water, and cutting these would likely kill the trees. Pics would help a lot.
