Hello I have a new plumcot tree, and there is only one main branch which comes off the trunk at a 30 degree angle, making the tree lopsided. I was advised to cut the tree below the branch/trunk union. I see some bumps, but no nodes that could become new branches along the trunk. Should I leave this tree alone, or cut it on the trunk and hope some branches sprout?

Here is a pic of the tree. The branch may not be at quite 30 degrees. What do you think?

I don't know exactly what advice to give, but for sure don't make that drastic of a cut right now, wait till dormancy next fall if at all. You could try to straghten the branch slowly by staking the tree, or you could actually just leave it as is. It will probably be fine just end up with a curved trunk as a mature tree.

I'd leave it as is. You might be able to graft something onto the trunk to even it up, but it may even it's self up naturally.

Do you think it's a bit sad looking? I'd bin it and buy a better one if it were me I think.

Dont cut it down or charlie brown wont have a x-mas tree next year. Next time pick a better tree to begin with. |

Pinch the tips of the tree - repeatedly. Pinching means removing just the last leave on the stem. Repeated pinching should awaken any dormant epicormic buds to allow for some sprouting back down the limbs and main trunk. Be aware that you have a tree susceptible to a wide variety of insects. |
