Hi folks, My first post here. I live in SW Montana (USA) and last fall we had an especially early hard freeze and dump of snow which killed a lot of trees in my area. I have a Patmore Ash -- planted about 5 years ago -- which didn't come back this spring. However, as the weeks went by new shoots began coming out from the base of the trunk. I'd like to try and let the tree come back if possible. However, if it continues the way it's going I'm going to have a bush -- not a tree. My question is ought I to be pruning back some of these shoots. Should I just pick on that looks the strongest and prune everything else away? Or what? Also, at one point would it be best to cut down the dead trunk above? Here's a picture of what I'm dealing with: |

You can take out the dead trunk any time and just select the strongest shoot for a leader.
