Hello all ![]() I am about to prune my young apple tree, midwinter here. I spotted a problem with the bark low down, seems to have receded to expose the inner core. I did not really want to cut all this section off, where marked with the red line, but if I don't will it worsen and cause bigger problems in the future? Would you make the cut where indicated or leave it? Are those white spots on the bark normal? I hope someone can offer me some advice, Thankyou. ![]()

I would cut it there, that way its a small cut andthe tree can heal,I also noticed cambium tearing on the smaller leader.

Looks like either a gall or some type of canker. jp |

I would agree the swelling is abnormal growth in response to either insect (gall) or fungi (canker), it would be best to remove now whilst the tree is young and vigorous, the white shapes are the lenticels on the branches nothing to be concerned about. ![]() Picture from Familiar Trees - Description of Terms |

Clem this is a good time to start to train the tree into to shape you eventually want, you will need to remove those crossing branches and if you keep ontop of those lower branches it will stop them becoming codominant.

White spots are lenticels. Cankered area let's hope it is not bacterial fire blight.
