Problem with Bradford Pear Tree

Default Problem with Bradford Pear Tree

I noticed a crack were a branch is near the bottom of the tree. It's a vertical crack about 16 inches long.The widest part near the top is about one and a half inches wide and it runs all the way through.What could have caused this, and should something be done with it ?
