Default Prepping my young tree for Irene

I have a maple tree that is about 12' tall. I staked it early this summer as it was developing a lean. Tomorrow and Sunday we're exspecting winds upwards of 80mph due to the incoming hurricane. Does the tree have the best chance of surviving the storm if i leave the stakes in, or should i remove them to allow it to sway from a lower point?

Default Staking a tree

Stake it well, perhaps 3 stakes with hessian webbing to the tree perhaps 2" wide.

You may find the leaves get ripped off the poor little tree.

Hi,

80 mph winds is strong enough to do damage to any size tree, a lot depends where your tree is ? is it protected by structures ? has it any other tree that offer some form of wind break ? or will it cop the full force of the winds? Then you have the possibility of flying debris taking your tree out aswell

I would leave the stakes in and if possible add some more to form a circle of stakes then tie bungi type of cord around the tree from the stakes into the higher parts of the tree, this will offer more support with flexibility. This may help?

Given the force of the expected winds I feel what will be will be. Some pictures before and after would be nice.
