Came homeafter a storm today to find that the poplar tree and thebackyard was damaged by high winds. At the spot where it began to branch apart, it was split, torn completely off. Looking at the tree, there is alot of wood missing and I'm not comfotable with it that spot supporting the amount of branches above. Another strong storm comes along and...yeah you get the idea. What I'd like to know is if I cut this tree, will it have regrowth? Will it fill itself back out? We really like the tree and don't want to cut it down completely but if we must, we must. |

| ![]() ![]() Here are pics of the damage. You can see where where the wind tore the tree apart. Also, looking at the full view of the tree, just imagine that about the same amount of branches on the left side as is on the right. Literally half is gone! Mate, time to kiss it goodbye and start again, with a tougher species. Regarding regrowth, topping, coppicing etc .... not ideal and debate-able, my advice for you is cut, stump grind and replant. Search the forum for "topping" "lopping" "epicormic" etc and you'll see what I mean.

I concur with Ekka. While there is still a fair amount of trunk wood, it's too far gone and will never really recover satisfactorily. Remove it and start again. |

| ![]() I hate to do it, but it does look pretty silly. And you're right- noone can guarantee that it's going to fill back out. I'll have to chat with the Mrs. about possible replacement options. Now I also have to do some work to the chainsaw first. If it's not one thing it's another. Thanks again! |

Quick update...mother nature took care of the tree, or what's left of it thanks to some 55 mph gusts!
