Default Poison Ivy overtaking Black Walnut trees

Hello,

I am in Ohio and we are trying to clean up some land that used to be pasture. There are many Black Walnut trees and almost every one has a pretty substantial poison ivy running up the trunk. I read in another post that I could cut away a section of the vine, but I would like to kill the vine (right?). Also, I assume there is poison ivy all over the ground too if it's in all the trees. We would like to be able to use this land and I have no idea where to begin with this problem.

Thank You

id cut the main trunk of the vine loose about three foot above ground, which should kill that vine. then pull that out by the roots...let the rest of the vine die on the tree, wont hurt it.

You may want a small manual winch to pull the roots. If you cut it now, but wait until the soil is moist from fall rains, you may get more of the roots out. I think that the slow, steady pull of a winch will get more of the roots than tugging and jerking, which is also hard on the joints.

There is a soap made in Oregon, sold in Bailey's, I believe, called Marie's Original Poison Oak Soap, which I works for P.I., too.

Bailey's - Poison Oak Soap

The oil will spread from clothing to truck to whatever. If possible, have some disposable clothes if you have a bunch to deal with.

It will be back. I don't often suggest herbicide, but invasive plants can be an exception. READ and ABIDE by instructions.

DON'T INHALE ANY SMOKE IF YOU BURN IT. YOU WILL GET POISON IVY RASH IN YOUR LUNGS AND IT COULD POTENTIALLY KILL YOU (IF YOU BREATHE ENOUGH, OTHERWISE JUST MISERY!!!!!).
