I have a poinsiana about 4 m tall which split at its first major fork in some high winds yesterday. Can the fork be bound up and the tree survive or is it necessary to make the unkindest cut of all. |

The biggest problem with these trees is that they are very poor compartmentalisers i.e they are not very good at fighting off infections, which means that installing decent cabling system isnt a real option and i assume there is a large basal wound from where the side broke away this will probably rot out before the tree can stop the infection setting in, pictures would be helpful but on the initial discription i would say a cut at the base maybe needed at about 2" inches offf the floor.
