I am concerned that our Poinciana may have a main branch at risk of breaking off and damaging the house. In the attached pictures, the branch shown is 118cm girth near the tree trunk, and has very heavy limbs for all of its considerable length. The collar of fibrous build-up at the junction with the main trunk was 30mm wide 10 years ago, and has widened to 100mm now. It looks to my uninformed eye as though it may be liable to break off. Your advice would be appreciated. Sincerely, Rex ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Jeff Darby; 21st February 2010 at 06:04 PM. Reason: embed pictures |

We need a distance shot, doesn't look good that's for sure but cable angles look bad too. Potential for pruning is likely poor too due to self lions tailed branches, need that distance shot. Propping could be the way to go.

I see three choises: One is to support the limb from the underside...and i like that idea. Two would be to lighten up the limb. Three would be a combination of the first two. Removal of the limb is out! Cabling is not a good choice here eather. I'll try to find some photographs of a tree that was supported from under the branch, and added quite a nice look. Had a rubber base inches away so the tree could move around and not make rub marks. The attachment is not the photo i was looking for, but you can see my idea. |

The central leader looks dodgy too, there is a crack on the joining timber opposite to the long latteral, i cleaned up a poinciana last year with similar form i say cleaned up as it fell apart over night and took out all the garden fences, especially likely to happen as we have more water, limbs get heavy outside and inside a bit of wind and then they fracture. but like the guys say an overall pic of the tree would really help

Thank you Ekka, vl2007 and Galbee. I will get more distant photo and post tomorrow. Am more apprehenive about possibility of separation of branch, following upon your opinions. Cheers, Rex |
