Hi, new here and need some help. this tree has something going on, it is about 30yrs old and I was told it was a dwarf maple. I am in NY. Bark is peeling and it has lumps where the bark is lifting. Do I need to take this down? Last edited by Eric Frei; 23rd August 2010 at 10:04 AM. Reason: load pics to this server as per rules size correctly |

Looks like fairly significant damage right in the croft there where the codominants split off. Some sort of fungal growth? Never seen one quite like that. The trunk timber below the croft does not look like it is living anymore, so rot is definitely on the way. I'd say that removal is starting to look like a good option. You may want to get an arborist in to do a report, but the tree looks like it has been very much weakened exactly where you do not want it to be weak. |

I agree with Dov. Removal is probably a safe bet, damage at the forks, and seam on the trunk. Doesn't look like a dwarf maple; might be a sycamore maple -- need closeups of leaves and keys hanging from branches. |

That tree is now CACTUS! The top must be sparse or dying back. Fungal canker. I know, get an arborist to stuff around with it for the next 5 years, trimming, injecting, treating, compost tea yada yada yada .... then cut it down if it's no good. ![]() We make a lot more doing that. ![]() Or invest now into something new. ![]() Those "other" arborists hate us for saying that. But the choice is yours really.
