Hi, I just moved into a new house and the only tree (which is a young tree) I have, i think is a oak, has something wrong with it. I looked the leaves all over, and it appears something is eating at all the leaves. You can see a picture of the leaves (sorry they are fuzzy, my camera is not that good) at Picasa Web Albums - Agent Fox - Tree Leaves I don't see any bugs, other than a couple lady bugs on it. Can someone help me identify what is eating at my leaves, and recommend a treatment of some sort? Thanks so much! |

It looks like a caterpillar, possibly oak looper? Where do you live? If you don't see caterpillars, they're doing the damage at night. To control caterpillars, try Bt (it won't kill the ladybird beetles).

Looks like grass hopper damage to me. Spray with a mixture of kaolin and diatomaceous earth - organic, looks like hell but keeps grasshoppers at bay. Remove the grass around the base of the sapling to a radius of at least 2 feet (more would be better.) Mulch with a layer of compost ( 1.5 inches deep) followed by 1.5 inches of hardwood mulch. Keep it off the trunk. |

Not to sure what little critter is having a go but you need a systemic insecticide! Absorbed by the tree and then eaten by the bug and thus ingested, killing the little beast! Not sure of branding where you are but our government gives a pesticide list i.e. DEFRA!
