I have scarfed and felled this type of palm before, just use a powerfull saw with a razor sharp chain and have a couple of blokes on a directional pull rope.

I hope you have a really really big chipper with very sharp knives for a Canary Island date palm. And they do scarf etc .... but the var you got has an outer loose coating of crap to make your day, maybe it's one of those real special ones covered in fishtail ferns up the trunk, people love doing that crap to them. Your chains do go blunt fast. Watch out for the spikes on the fronds. And tell us all about your great time with it.

![]() I find cutting them into the biggest pieces you can and then cutting lengthwise saves blunting your chain as much, and make sure you clean your saw after. | |

If you've quoted this job not knowing any of the above you're in for a good lesson today. ![]() I rarely get the job of removing these because i quote accordingly, knowing full well what is involved, start to finish. There is always someone with a cheap quote though who just hasn't experienced the joys of removing one yet. Short, stubby ones that can be worked from ground level aren't too bad. Once you've got a few m of trunk it's a different storey, esp. if you dont have room to fell it. Best method is using a crane, 1 cut at the bottom, lift it into a skip bin, go home & clean your saw! You want to strip it down completely, remove the cover plate over the chainbrake too. It will corrode any metal part of your saw. |

just had surgery this year for a date thorn that got broken off in my knee. swelled up, couldn't see anything ofcourse, didn't bleed. swelled my knee up a bit for a week then localized to an area that was consistent with the direction i thought it went. when it happened i said, oh no!!! i did not just do that!! looked and saw one part of the thorn broken off the frond i thought i hit. anyways, when they did surgery the doctor laughed and said it shot across the room, literally. please work slow, good thick gloves can help, a little(although i rarely use them myself), please wear a head protection system , something that provides a mesh barrier between your eye and the tree. and wear safety glasses. chaps would be nice, steel toe boots, etc, etc. in fact , just shoot the the thing with a rocket launcher, have a beer and post it here. |

IM BACK!!! I Dont know wat i was stressing about, this by far has been amongst the easiest trees to remove, started at 9am finished by 11.30, I spured up, cut out all the foliage and then we scarfed it, BEAUTIFUL!, i got pronged twicew, my little finger and my upper thigh, which i applied Dettol solution to straight away, will this help?? i had an 026 & an 036 Trunk was about 110 in diameter Thanks heaps guys, i think my success with this job was being "overly Cautious" and thats why i didnt get spiked too much. Your help assured me with alot of the differant ways to cut them I Found: Remove all leaflets first Scarf ovewr wat you can The bigger base needs to get Shaved with the saw cut blocks into reasonable size for moving |

Yes. Usually the bottom 1m is an adventicious style of pumped up roots full of crap. Usually the trunks are full of dirt from ole petioles not being removed and fish fern growing there.

hey ekka, yeh there was birdshit everywhere, all the old stubs from the palm going all the way up to the leaves were filled with shit. But no prblem with the saws watsoever, i just cleaned them, the 026 needs a sharpen now but thats just for good measure. because i only had the smaller barred saws i cut the palm block like cheese cubes. |

I've never removed one, but I have cleaned them up. Price to clean one starts at $250.00. Here in the Keys, Dates get a lot of workmans comp filings, so you need to price accordingly.
