I had a fallen tree stump removed a couple of days after a storm about 3 months ago. because yard space is limited I must plant a tree in the same spot. It was a bradford Pear, 9 to 10 yrs old. I would like a similar tree,Is a cleavand pear a better choice and could it be planted in same spot? someone said I should be concerned about acidity? The stump is gone but should I be concerned about the old roots? The same questions apply also to an October Glory that was removed the same day. Thanks Dwayne |

I would be tempted to let the soil rest for a bit longer. Stump 'grindings' and fresh wood chips I usually leave for about three to six months, as they are acidic and also draw nutrients (primarily nitrogen) from the soil. The old roots remaining in the ground will eventually decompose, but to speed up decomposition you can add animal manure or other compost to the soil. Planting a similar tree is not a problem, providing the previous tree did not die of a disease specific to the genus. If it simply fell over due to wind/storm then you can replant the same species. Cleveland Pears are a strong growing and compact variety so would possibly be a better choice. Cheers! |
