| Out here in southern California, alot of the pines in the area I live and the places I work are being hit by pine beetles. Wanted to know if there are some feedback you all have for: 1. Specific things to look for showing that beetling is happening. (what, where to find it, etc) 2. Treatment if available, and how it's administered. 3. Pruning tips for such pines. It's sad to see some of them go if they could've been saved, and some that h.o.'s are asking me if they can be treated.

over here we havent been hard hit yet but its certain to arrive. im no expert but its like anything else in nature. when large populations of species enjoy prolonged life spans they , with age, become weak and unable fight off enviromental factors that in their youth may not have been a huge problem. many of our larger natural forests have been protected from things like logging, pesticides, invasive species, disease, forest fires, ect. this allowed them to flourish. theyve done well for years but finally mother nature wins again. the lost of many of our pristine forests is inevitable. we need to gear up for the future. plant....plant...plant. some people think fire is the only way to rid them. fires=notrees=nobeatles=new growth. scientists are trying to use nemitodes to decrease the beatles rate of reproduction. the pioneer beetles come first...they burrow into bark and lay eggs in the phloem section. they carry a fungus with them as well as pherimones which attraxt other beetles. the fungus block the trees sticky secreation and acts as an anticoagulant in the tree. the tree basically bleed to death turning the needles reddish brown. hugebonfire!

I am not an expert but I have been working with bark beetles in Ponderosa pine in Arizona for a few years. Some of the signs of beetles here are pitch tubes, these are where the beetle bores in to lay its larva. The trees natural defense is to "flush" the beetles out. A sign of active beetles is when the pitch tubes have red saw dust in them. The IPS Beetle attacks the crown of the tree through fresh slash. The beetles are capable of living in a tree up to seven generations. On my computer at work I have some articles from the Arizona State Land forester and others I will see about sending those this week. I ran a fuels crew for a local fire district, in which I have gotten very familiar with this information due to or work with the state forester and a private forester. If you have anyother questions please write. Good Luck, Colin Port Affordable Fellers LLC affordablefellers@gmail.com cmp2921@yahoo.com

People here used to spray lindane six to eight foot up the bark and it helped but one needs to understand eradication of a bug is sometime detrimental in phc, many bugs or organisms live in symbiosis with one another! Also the good bugs in phc can be killed, introducing further stress to a already stressed tree. Most times all we can do is limit them to populations that the tree can endure!

Quintrex, I don't know if you're asking me, but I'll answer anyway. YES, in the Eastern side of the province. The government brought in pruning and removal regulations in January of '05. The number of infected trees has not risen much in the last 5 year, due inpart to a program called the Costshare elm pruning program. This program splits the cost of pruning between the qualifying cities (and towns) and the Saskatchewan Enviornment Department. I am attaching a copy of the regulations, have a look and let me know what you think. Its not perfect but it beats nothin'.
