My mature paper birch tree has lost about 30% of its leaves. The rest have a mottled look to them. It has been hot recently. But the other trees have not dropped leaves. What could it be? And should I be worried? This is a big tree. |

The mottled look on the leaves is most likely a fungus caused by cool temperatures and excessive amounts of rain during May and June. It is fairly late in the season and the damage to the trees should be minor. The fungus is causing the leaves to drop. Applying fertilizer or root growth stimulator this fall would not hurt and might increase the health for next spring. In the spring, at the time of bud break, and two additional times after that, an application of a fungicide to combat the leaf spot would help to minimize damage for next year. Contact a local arborist and get things arranged now so that they can happen in a timely manor next year. In the Trumbull, CT area I could recommend several; Connecticut Arborists, Long Hill Tree, and Jim's Tree Service. All three are licensed, insured, and completely professional.
