Default Oak Tree Borers in Virginia

I live in Springfield, Va, near the metro DC area. I have a huge (75 ft?) tall oak in my side yard. I think it's a red oak. I believe there are borers evidenced in the bark and thinning of the top leaf layer overhanging the street. At least that's what a tree specialist told us. He recommended a trunk injection. I have read about various methods to treat it by either repetitive spraying or trunk injections. Since the tree is so large I think the trunk injections would work better. I have not actually seen a borer to capture it and determine what kind it is. I am sending two pictures for you to advise me better. I have more but guess I'm only allowed to send two? I'd like to be able to buy and insert the trunk injection myself, rather than pay someone $200 to do it. I've heard there are injections that will last up to two years. What do you advise? Where and what do i buy? Please email me your response as well. Thank you.

Well, you can try to kill borers with injections but it's pretty hard to do that.

I would suggest you go with a pro and get the injections done. Also there's the issue of why the borers are attacking the tree, normally they attack the stressed ones so perhaps some improvements to tree health should also be considered.

Relieve the stress and the borers will not be a problem.
