I feel that this tree is going to die if I don't do something about this. I built my house about a year ago and this tree is one of the reasons I pick this spot. We've been getting a lot of rain here lately and it looks like it is destroying my tree. Do they make anything to patch this area of the tree to keep water from entering? Also what kind of tree is this? |

Certainly looks like that cavity is large........ not in its self a problem, however I would have some concern regarding the % or Degree of opening that the cavity is, there is some respected study's out there to suggest that 120 deg. ( out of 360deg.) is MAX opening allowed to resist bending type fracture's. IMHO this tree would deserve/require a full assessment, with this and other things considered. NB: There are many many other aspect to consider when assessing a trees risk of failure. Choose the guy you get to look at this wisely! it's also a Massive spot for pathogens, insects, pests ect to enter the trees system. im guessn its a Quercus spp oak tree, these species are good compartmentalizes and have strong CODIT walls. This helps in resisting the spread of decay. a combo of Pruning and Cabling may be and option here, but i wouldn't want to make that call without being there, and having had inspected her. good Luck, and keep us informed steve ps maby move the picnic table ![]()

Steve has given you very good advice, we are very limited when it comes to providing detailed advice inr elation to potential problems liek yours. You need someone on site with you touching the tree to make a worthwhile assessment. If you are concerned about the potential cost of getting a report on your tree and the info is just for you and your family not for council local authority etc... Then contact a qualified Arborist that carries out visual assessments and has experience in your area with that species, tell them what concerns you and what you need...ask for a quote of they would charge to come out and spend 30-45 mins looking at your tree and advising you..before they come out. Most good quality consulting Arbs will not excessively charge to come out and provide verbal advice, your tree looks lovely and well worth the effort to get it assessed. |

I wonder what happened to that fella, big wound in an unusual spot? You reckon a 3rd leader broke out? I do, I reckon it was a 3 way fork and a honking piece fell in the direction of that picnic table. From the pics it appears to be a ton of room around it, I reckon you could get a comfortable 10 years out of that tree, no sweat. Like the others before me, get a good arborist out. We like seeing trees and helping them out, just today I did a verbal consult, as the lady was paying for time and got her diagnosis on the first tree in about 3 minutes flat she decided to have the whole yard looked over. I even pointed out the long term evidence of pot bound trees when they are planted out and then decline, she's so much the wiser now and will choose more carefully at the nursery. No need for extensive reports, I have even done video and audio reports. People just need some memory joggers, often I ask them to make notes.
