Default Need help with a kumquat

We live in France and have been given a kumquat by an English friend who kept it in his garden (in a pot) for 3 years, it was thriving although it didn't produce any flowers or fruit. It has now been repotted and although it grows well during the summer, in the autumn it loses it's leaves and looks as though it's dead - very sad!! I know they have a 'winter dormancy' period but I can't understand why it completely 'dies back' every winter. Our temperatures here can reach 40°c in summer and drop to -10°c in winter, but I've read that this shouldn't cause any problems for a kumquat. It is outside, we keep it well-watered and it is planted in normal compost - should it be ericaceous compost? Are they acid loving? Also, I am unsure as to what to feed it with. Please help!! Thanks.

Welcome and about your tree,if it has a dormancy period then it could be put in a green house with all the water and fertilizer and still go dormiant, this is nothing to be concerned about.i'm sure someone more familiar with the species will be along.
