Default Need Help With Crepe Myrtle

Last spring, we planted a Crepe Myrtle in our backyard. It was a small tree, about 3 feet high, that my wife bought for me online.

We are in Rochester, NY - Zone 6, although we may just be on the border of 5 and 6.

The tree did well in the summer. I wrapped it in burlap over the winter to protect it from the snow. It was a pretty cold winter here.

The tree didn't sprout leaves in the spring, and we thought it was dead for sure, but now, new growth is emerging from the ground. See picture.

The new growth is in five different branches, right from the ground, so I'm concerned about the shape of the tree if it makes it another winter. Do I need to prune it?

Also, come winter, how best should I protect it?

TIA
