Default My tree is sick

Hey everyone,
I am not very good with trees or plants, however I have one that is in my front yard that is in need of loving desperatley!
I think it is a maple, 14 years old, and about 25' high.
I wanted to know if anyone could give me a little advice on what to do about the dying branches on it and any other health advice...there is some moss on the bottom that concerns me as well...I have included a link to a couple of pics.
As I said I am not the best with caring for my poor tree, but I figure I should be pruning that big dead branch and then covering the cut with something?

Thanks,
Laramie Z.

Hey all, I tried for some time to get my pictures down to a size that would allow me to attach to no avail!
My wife tried to post the pics somewhere else with a URL to it and I think she may have goofed a bit so I will put the pics later...

sorry and thanks,

Laramie

Hi,
Welcome to Treeworld, I have added a link to help in resizing your pictures,

How to resize pictures, EASY! | Click here before posting a picture.

Hopefully this will make it a lot easier for you to re- size and upload your pictures.

It would be nice if you could get a photo of the trunk flare, is there any way you can remove some of the Hosta? Also, a close-up photo of that crud on the trunk would be helpful.

It will take me a couple of days to get it done, but I will get a close up and remove the plants around the trunk!

Thanks for looking,

Laramie
