Just curious if anyone has a good idea on how to kill three, yes three, oak tree stumps that sit between my garage and a recently build metal shed building. They were cut about 8" above ground and right now I have three small bushes (saplings growing from the stumps) about 4 ft high. The problem here is that I don't have the clearance to dig down and chain saw the tap root which I've done with about 6 other carelessly grown (uncut saplings) in very inappropriate places. I've read some of the forums on the use of Roundup but they were primarily in Austraila/NZ - would this type of grinding and deluging with what I know to be Roundup work also? These stumps are a danger to my garage as they not only sit RIGHT next to the foundation of the garage but directly under the new roofing/gutter job... six feet more and they'll be pushing the roof off. Any suggestion, tried and true, would be very much appreciated. : |

Roundup is glyphosate, a poison to kill the tree. You apply it to fresh cuts, swab it on undiluted, that should kill the stump. After that it should die, then the termites will come, so will rot and eventually it will be gone and the soil may subside.

And if you don't want to use Roundup, just keep cutting off the sapling growth, like every week, and the tree will eventually give up, die and rot away -- with or without help.

Thank you, and all the way from Australia even! ![]() Can you tell me though, do I need to do the plunge cuts ( I understand the cuts need to be in the cambium) but I'm not sure my hands are strong enough to do the plunge cuts (read the warnings on that too)or are there other ways to get the Roundup to be drawn down into the roots? Again, thank you so much for the quick reply. |

Yeah, only the cambium as active, the heartwood is deadwood (non conductive). You ringbark it, a shallow cut around the stump through the bark and squirt roundup in there, do not dilute the Roundup.
