Hello all! This is my first post and I'm rather new to trees so bear with me. I bought a maple tree from a nursery about two years ago. It's pretty tall, over 6 feet. It was doing fine until last year. Before the winter, the leaves were dying. The deer had gotten to it (wiring fell down) and there was a tree nearby that looked diseased so I thought maybe mine got diseased as well. I expected when it was spring time that my tree would be dead. However, below where the deer ate there are beautiful new leaves! And the tree is getting taller. But there are no new leaves above where the deer ate. Is there any way to save it? Do you think it could be associated with not getting enough water? I would have thought that if I didn't give it enough water there would be no new leaves anywhere on the tree. Thank you so much. ![]() Dead branches? ![]() What the deer ate. ![]() What the deer ate and the new leaves below. Last edited by Eric Frei; 21st April 2010 at 08:01 AM. It looks like its been ringbarked. Those suckers will take over while the original trunk will eventually die off.

I'd remove and replant. If retaining you'd want to cut that dead stem off close to the ground but above the new growth. Thing is your new "sucker" tree is actually coppice regrowth, in the bush they also call this secondary growth forest. The coppice tree wont be as good as an original with a decay vector at the root crown. Such a small tree, you might as well wait for a replanted tree to grow than manage a coppice.
